Dreadnought Building redecoration programme

We wish to bring to your attention that there will be a running programme of redecoration and repair in the Dreadnought Library over the next few months, work on which has already commenced. Work is mainly to the corridors, doorways and walkways.

Although we will endeavour to keep disruption to minimum, we kindly ask that you are aware of the works and give your attention to any signage notifying you of alternative routes through the building should areas need to be closed off temporarily. The paint that is being used for the redecoration is low/zero volatile organic compound paints which will have low odour levels.

Once you have supplied this information, you will receive a confirmationemail. Select the link provided in the email to activate your access to the SciVerseScience Direct mobile app. You will only need to confirm your email only once.

1. An email will besent to the email address you provided containing a link. You must click on thelink to validate your access to SciVerse Science Direct mobile app.

2. It is recommendedthat you validate your email address from the mobile device as it will launchthe app automatically.

Taylor & Francis Online have introduced a mobile versionof their database allowing you to access the resource via iPhone, Android,Blackberry and tablet devices. It’s free to use, and can be set up in a fewminutes when you are on campus.

Getting started on Taylor & Francis Online Mobileinvolves simply typing the url www.tandfonline.cominto the browser of a mobile device. There is also help and instructions available to get users started at http://www.tandfonline.com/page/help/mobile.

As a member of the University, you can extend access toyour mobile device for 180 days by pairing it to our library. An email alertwill be sent to you three days before the pairing expires.

If you are connecting to Taylor & Francis OnlineMobile via the University wireless network GreenNet, your device will be pairedto the library automatically.

Pairing process

Visit the full site while authenticated via theLibrary & IT tab in the university portal when you are on campus. (If you're not sure how to login to e-resources via the portal, you can select this link to find out what to do).
Click the Mobile link at the top of the screen.
You will be directed to a page where you can sign inor register to receive a mobile pairing code. Save the code once you havereceived it – you will then be able to use it for five minutes.
On your mobile device, go to www.tandfonline.com, tapthe Settings icon and select Device Pairing.
Log in here then enter the pairing code and tap VerifyCode.
Go to My Account to check your pairing status.

If you do not pair your device to Taylor & FrancisOnline you will still be able to access content that has been made free toview.

The mobile site works on the following versions ofAndroid, iPhone and Blackberry:

iPhone and iPod devices running OS 3.2 or later

Students, staff and researchers in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Engineering will be pleased to know that we have a new subscription to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) full text journals, conference proceedings, and active standards via IEEEXplore.

Subject coverage includes electrical engineering, computer science, and related technologies. There is a backfile to 1872 for select titles as well as INSPEC abstract / citation and bibliographic records.

You can access it on and off campus via the University portal with your computer ID and password.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text replaces CINAHL and the British Nursing Index on EBSCOhost from today. CINAHL Plus is an expanded version of CINAHL with extracontent, most of it full text.

For those teaching or studying nursing and midwifery, you have access to the British Journal of Nursing andthe British Journal of Midwifery online.

You can see the range of journals available asfull text from the Publications tab when you are logged in to CINAHL Plus with Full Text.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text has almost the same content as CINAHL and British Nursing Index and is accessible via EBSCOhost so you can search ittogether with Medline and PsycInfo.

The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Report has been the United States' principal record of political and historical open source intelligence for nearly 70 years. The original mission of the FBIS was to monitor, record, transcribe, and translate intercepted radio broadcasts from foreign governments, official news services, and clandestine broadcasts from occupied territories. FBIS Daily Reports, 1974–1996, constitutes a unique archive of transcripts of foreign broadcasts and news that provides insight into the second half of the 20th century; many of these materials are firsthand reports of events as they occurred.

FBIS Daily Reports, 1974–1996 consist of translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government statements from nations around the globe. These media sources were monitored in their languages of origin, translated into English, and issued by an agency of the US government. FBIS Daily reports cover the following regions and dates:

Middle East and North Africa, 1974–1987
Near East and South Asia, 1987–1996
South Asia, 1980–1987
Sub-Saharan Africa, 1974–1980 and
Africa, 1987–1996
Eastern Europe, 1974–1996

When viewing individual titles you can gain access to the digitised archive by selecting Back Volumes from the Journals Menu column. If you search the platform rather than browse you will retrieve full text only where it is available as part of the archive.

Science Direct iPhone Application

There is a new application for iPhone users allowing access to SciVerse ScienceDirect. The application enables you to search and access full text articles (where the University has paid a subscription) from your iPhone. The University uses single-sign on to authenticate our students and staff and provide access to our e-resources on and off campus. This has to be done via the University of Greenwich portal. We do not use individual Athens usernames and passwords.

Login to the portal with your computer ID and password
Click on the Library & IT tab
In the e-library channel, click on the Databases, journals and e-books link
On the Library Databases page the e-resources are arranged alphabetically by title
Click on the letter of the alphabet for the resource you need along the top of the A-Z list or scroll down to the resource in the list.

This registration allows you to use personalised features such as saved searches and creating search alerts, journals alerts and more.

We now have access to the UK Data Archive.

The UK Data Archive (UKDA) is a centre of expertise in data acquisition, preservation, dissemination and promotion and is curator of the largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities in the UK. Founded in 1967, it now houses several thousand datasets of interest to researchers in all sectors and from many different disciplines.

This collection of more than 20,000 pamphlets from seven UK institutions provides researchers, students, and teachers with invaluable access to primary sources with which to study the socio-political and economic landscape of 19th century Britain. It contains the most significant British pamphlets from the 19th century held in UK research libraries.

SPSS Version 17

The latest version of SPSS (version 17) is available for loan in the library. Versions 14 and 15 have been withdrawn and we are only loaning Versions 16 and 17.

System Requirements

The minimum hardware and software requirements for PASW Statistics are:

Operating System Microsoft® Windows XP (32-bit version) or Vista (32-bit and 64-bit versions).

Configuration

Intel or AMD processor running at 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher.
512 megabytes (MB) of RAM or more.
At least 1 gigabyte (GB) is recommended.
650 MB of available hard-disk space.
Installing help for all languages requires 1.1 gigabytes (GB).
CD-ROM drive. Super VGA (800x600) or a higher-resolution monitor.

Software

Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

Upgrading from a Previous Release

You do not need to uninstall an old version of SPSS/PASW Statistics before installing the new version. If you want to keep both versions, be sure to install the new version in a separate directory. If you install the new version in the same directory in which a previous version is installed, the previous version is automatically uninstalled.

Installing from a CD-ROM

Windows XP

Insert the Disk 1CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
The AutoPlay feature presents a menu.
On the AutoPlay menu, click Install PASW Statistics, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen. See Notes for Installation on the disk for any special instructions.

Windows Vista

You must run the AutoPlay as administrator:

Close the AutoPlay window that automatically appeared.
Using Windows Explorer, browse to the CD-ROM.
Right-click setup.exe at the root of the CD and choose Run as Administrator.
On the AutoPlay menu, click Install PASW Statistics, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen. See Notes for Installation on the disk for any special instructions.

Uninstalling PASW Statistics

To completely uninstall PASW Statistics:

Use the Windows Control Panel to remove PASW Statistics.

Zetoc Alerts

There is an additional new functionality available when using Zetoc Alerts. A user's Alert list(s) name can now be renamed. Mimas have provided an Alert Help Guide.

Zetoc provides access to the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents. The database contains details of around 20,000 current journals and 16,000 conference proceedings published per year from 1993 to date. Zetoc is updated daily. You can see a list of the journal titles covered by Zetoc.

Digimap software updates

EPS files are no longer available from any facility within Digimap's OS Collection, including Carto, but EDINA is working on the provision of additional formats to PDF.

Digimap Roam

EDINA has developed a new mapping facility, called Roam. Still in a development phase, Roam offers the usual search functions as well as "slippy maps", the click-and-drag function used to position a map, familiar to users of other popular online mapping facilities. It is easier to locate your map, easier to zoom in and out, and now offers maps at 12 different fixed scales. An additional small scale Ordnance Survey mapping product, MiniScale, has been included, and other datasets (e.g. Strategi and OS MasterMap) are available at more than one fixed scale.

Currently Roam is available to all registered users of Digimap's Ordnance Survey Collection. From the OS Collection Home page; you will find the new icon next to those for Classic and Carto.

Roam will run in Beta alongside the current Classic facility until January 2010 when Classic will be withdrawn entirely. Regular updates will be made to Roam to add new functionality, such as MyMaps, prior to its release as a full service in January 2010.

The UK Federation has been in operation since 1st August 2008 and provides an additional way to access e-resources which will eventually supersede access via Athens. Previously e-resources were accessed by:

· IP address on campus
· Athens for off campus
· Via a proxy server for non-Athens resources

Users will have noticed that some e-resources include an option for users to login via the UK Federation as part of the authentication process.

When accessing the following resources: Digimap, Jorum, British Library Archival Sound Recordings, Film and Sound Online, Newsfilm Online, Construction Information Service and Occupational Health & Safety Information Service and Radio at BUFVC, TVTimes Project and Go-Geo! from the list of Databases you should click on the Login via UK Federation icon or link. Accessing E-books via the SwetsWise database

It’s now possible to access e-books via the SwetsWise database. First of all log into the portal (on and off campus) and go to the Library & Computing/My Library & IT tab.

In the e-Library box click on the Electronic databases, electronic journals and e-books link. On the Library Databases and Electronic Information Resources page, scroll down and click on SwetsWise in the list. SwetsWise opens in a new window.

Place the cursor on the Content Search tab then move down to publication search and then move across and click the all your publications option. On the next screen type your keywords into the search box and then click on the arrow next to show all to view the drop-down menu. Click on eBook in the list and then click on the Search button.

Note:
MyiLibrary can also be accessed on and off campus via the MyAthens list of resources and via the Library Catalogue and the MyiLibrary platform from the A-Z list of databases. The MyAthens link is in the third paragraph from the top of the Library Databases and Electronic Information Resources page.

Science Direct full text searching

Science Direct does not allow searches to be restricted solely to paid-for or subscribed content from the usual search screen. This means that the entire holdings of Science Direct are searched by default.

If you want to limit your results only to full text content that the library has paid for or subscribes to then follow these instructions:

In Science Direct click on the Advanced Search link in the grey panel
Click on the Journals tab above the Term(s) box
Next click on the arrow next to All journals in the Source field and highlight subscribed journals
Enter your search phrase or keywords (Note: individual keywords must be linked with the word 'and' unless it is a phrase). Phrases and keywords can be combined by using 'and' to link them.
Click the Search button

Science Direct Athens username activation

New Resource - British Periodicals Online

British Periodicals Online is a collection of journals published in Britain between the 1680s and 1930s. Thematically wide ranging: from literature, drama and architecture to philosophy, history and the social sciences. No password is required when accessing it from within the University via the portal. For external access via the portal you will need to set up the proxy server on the machine you are using.

Scitable

Nature Education has launched a free, online educational resource for undergraduate biology students and educators. Currently focussed on genetics, Scitable combines scientific information with social media functionality.

Scitable provides students with free online access to more than 180 overviews of key genetics concepts. The overviews are evidence-based and have been vetted by Nature Publishing Group staff. By connecting with other Scitable users via groups, chat functionality and other social media features, students can collaborate online with classmates, or with a wider community of experts, researchers and fellow students.

Scitable is also intended as a teaching tool. Educators can set up public or private groups for their students, providing reading lists, course-packs of Scitable articles and group discussions. Scitable is flexible and can be incorporated into courseware services such as Blackboard.

Scitable currently contains content in the field of genetics, specifically: chromosomes and cytogenetics, evolutionary genetics, gene expression and regulation, gene inheritance and transmission, genes and disease, genetics and society, genomics, nucleic acid structure and function, and population and quantitative genetics. It's free and easy to use, and it provides access to the most recent tables of contents of over 11,000 scholarly journals from more than 400 publishers. It helps scholars, researchers, academics and anyone else keep up-to-date with what's being published in the most recent issues of journals on almost any subject.

Using ticTOCs, you can find journals of interest by title, subject or publisher, view the latest TOC, link through to the full text of over 250,000 articles (where institutional or personal subscriptions, or Open Access, allow), and save selected journals to MyTOCs so that you can view future TOCs (free registration is required if you want to permanently save your MyTOCs). ticTOCs also makes it easy to export selected TOC RSS feeds to popular feedreaders such as Google Reader and Bloglines.
